Non ci sono dubbi, Instagram ha rivoluzionato il modo con cui condividiamo non solo immagini ma stralci di vita, ha rimpicciolito un mondo che già grazie a internet da almeno due decenni sembra essere a portata di mano - e di click - ovunque e per chiunque. In questo mondo piccolino le sorprese sono davvero dietro l'angolo. Ed è quindi stato per me assolutamente normale constatare che i miei metroreaders si erano trasferiti a Montreal. Anzi no, erano anche a Montreal. Anzi, ancora no, a Montreal c'era una ragazza che aveva la mia stessa ossessione, quella di fotografare il lector metropolitanus nell'atto per lui più intimo e religioso. E lo faceva come me di nascosto, inventandosi angoli e inquadrature rubati e illeciti, solo per il gusto di testimoniare al mondo che no, non è vero che il libro è morto. Il libro è vivo! E viaggia anche parecchio.

Tell us something about yourself

My name is Mélanie Francès and I am originally from France where I was born and grew up. I moved to Canada in 1993 to do a Masters in Creative Writing and decided to stay here, even though the winters are ridiculously cold. I am a writer and published two collections of poems, the last one in Ireland, called "Anatomy of a Love Affair: My Life in the Movies".

I am now working on a novel about immigrants in the USA at the beginning of the 20th century and the birth of the movies.

I work as a creative researcher in advertising, where I spend my day finding interesting trends, photographers, illustrators etc for the creative and art directors. 

Mi chiamo Mélanie Francès e sono nata e cresciuta in Francia. Mi sono trasferita in Canada nel 1993 per seguire un Master in Scrittura Creativa e decisi poi di restare qui, anche se gli inverni sono freddi da non credere. Sono una scrittrice e ho pubblicato due raccolte di poesie, l'ultima in Irlanda, intitolata "Anatomia di una storia d'amore: la mia vita nei film". 

Al momento sto lavorando a un romanzo sugli immigrati negli Stati Uniti all'inizio del XX secolo e la nascita dei film. Lavoro nella ricerca creativa per la pubblicità, e passo la giornata a trovare tendenze interessanti, fotografi, illustratori etc per i direttori creativi e gli art director. 

Come hai iniziato a fotografare i subway reader?

How come you've begun taking photos of subway readers?

One day in the subway, I took a picture of a girl reading right across from me and thought that it would be a really cool idea to take pictures of people reading real books. A way to occupy myself during my boring metro rides every day and celebrate readers at the same time. It was an interesting artistic and creative challenge, finding new ways of showing these readers who are fascinating because they are lost in their world, in their heads in the middle of a crowded place.

Un giorno in metropolitana ho fotografato una ragazza che leggeva proprio di fronte a me e ho pensato che sarebbe stato interessante fotografare gente che leggeva libri. Un modo divertente per tenermi occupata durante le mie noiose corse in metropolitana e allo stesso tempo rendere omaggio ai lettori. Era un'interessante sfida artistica e creativa, trovari modi nuovi per mostrare questi lettori, che sono affascinanti perché immersi nel loro mondo, nelle loro teste, proprio nel mezzo di un luogo affollato.

Spesso ritrai le tue vittime alle spalle. E' mai successo che qualcuno si accorgesse che lo stavi fotografando? E come ha reagito?

You often shoot your victims from behind. Have you ever been caught in the act? What was their reaction?

I've chosen to be a little bit of a voyeur and not ask for permission from people. That way I get more spontaneous, authentic moments. I have never to this day been caught! It's always the people around them that notice me taking the photo sometimes but nobody seems to care. I guess I've been lucky. If someone caught me in the act, I would explain what my project is and if they didn't want me to post their picture on Instagram, I wouldn't. 

Ho deciso di essere un po' voyeur e non chiedere il permesso alle persone. In questo modo posso catturare momenti più spontanei, autentici. A oggi, non sono mai stata beccata!  Sono sempre le persone intorno a loro che mi notano mentre scatto, a volte, ma a nessuno sembra importare. Credo di essere stata fortunata. Se qualcuno mi cogliesse nell'atto, gli spiegherei in che cosa consiste il mio progetto e se non volessero essere pubblicati su Instagram, rispetterei la loro volontà.

Quali sono i soggetti che ti ispirano di più?

What kind of people catch your attention?

The setting catches my attention first, the context, the light, how they stand amidst other people. Then it's the people themselves, maybe something they're wearing, their posture. 

Prima di tutto cattura la mia attenzione l'ambientazione, il contesto, la luce, come queste persone stan

o in mezzo agli altri. Poi sono le persone in sé, magari qualcosa che indossano, la loro postura.

Io ho un'idea: potremmo fondare un Comitato per la Sensibilizzazione alla Lettura in metropolitana e tappezzare le pareti dei treni con le foto dei nostri readers creando un'asse Milano-Montreal. Forse così si potrebbe rianimare una pratica, quella della lettura di libri cartacei, che sembra ormai in via di estinzione. Ovviamente è uno scherzo, ma ci sarà pure qualcosa che possiamo fare, no?

I have an idea: we could found a Help Reading on Subways Commitee and cover the train walls with the shots of our readers, making a Milan-Montreal axis. Maybe we'll be able to give a new life to an old and on the verge of disappearing practice like reading paper books. I'm joking, of course, but there will be something we could do together, won't there?

What an amazing idea! I definitely think this project deserves other ways of being shown. An exhibition one day? A book?

Che idea meravigliosa!Credo davvero che questo progetto meriti di essere mostrato attraverso altri mezzi. Una mostra un giorno? Un libro?

Ti è mai successo di scendere alla fermata sbagliata perché stavi cercando l'inquadratura perfetta?

Have you ever got off at the wrong stop, because you were looking for the perfect shot?

I never got off at the wrong stop but a few times, I almost missed my stop because I was still taking pictures as I was leaving the subway. I usually take a lot of shots and then just choose the best one.

Non sono mai scesa alla fermata sbagliata, ma qualche volta mi è quasi capitato di perdere quella giusta perché stavo ancora scattando foto mentre lasciavo il treno. In genere scatto molte foto e poi scelgo la migliore.

Hai figli? Se sì come li invogli alla lettura?

Have you any children? If you do, what do you do to make books and reading appealing for them?

No children yet but would love to have one or two one day! I will absolutely introduce them to great books and stories very young. Today, there are amazingly beautiful and engaging stories being developed for the iPad too, which are interactive and a great way to introduce kids to the world of the imagination.

Non ho ancora figli, ma un giorno mi piacerebbe averne uno o due! Di certo li farei avvicinare a buoni libri e buone storie molto giovani. Oggi ci sono anche molte storie strepitose e coinvolgenti pensate per l'iPad, interattive, che sono un modo strepitoso di introdurre i bambini al mondo dell'immaginazione.
